Step-by-step guide for oil change on M54 engines

Changing the oil in a BMW M54 engine (2.2–3.0 L capacity) is a simple procedure thanks to the convenient top-mounted oil filter. You'll need approximately 6.5 liters of oil (BMW Longlife-01 approval), a new filter, O-rings, and a 17 mm Allen key or socket for the drain plug.

What you need:

  • 5W-30 or 5W-40 engine oil (6.5 L capacity).
  • Oil filter (e.g., Mann HU 925/4 x or Mahle OX 1541D).
  • O-ring set (usually included with the filter).
  • New oil pan drain plug or copper/aluminum washer for it.
  • Oil filter cap socket (usually 36 mm) with a ratchet.
  • A set of wrenches/sockets (for removing the crankcase guard and drain plug, often a 17mm wrench).
  • A container for draining the used oil (at least 7 liters).
  • Rags, funnel, and gloves.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Warm the engine to operating temperature to make the oil more fluid, then turn off the engine and open the hood.
  2. Remove the oil filler cap and lift the dipstick slightly (this will help the oil drain faster).
  3. Replace the oil filter:
    1. Using a 36mm wrench, carefully unscrew the oil filter housing cover (it is located at the front of the engine, closer to the intake).
    2. Remove the old filter and remove the old rubber O-rings from the stem and cover.
    3. Install the new O-rings from the filter kit, after lubricating them with fresh oil.
    4. Install the new filter into the filter cup until it clicks into place, then screw the cap back on. The recommended tightening torque is 25-27 Nm.
  4. Drain the old oil:
    1. Drive the vehicle onto a pit/overpass or raise it on a lift.
    2. Remove the engine guard (if equipped) to access the oil pan.
    3. Place a container underneath to catch the used oil and carefully unscrew the drain plug. Be careful—the oil is hot!
    4. Wait until the oil has completely drained (about 10-15 minutes).
  5. Close the drain hole:
    1. Clean the plug seat.
    2. Replace the O-ring on the plug (or install a new plug).
    3. Tighten the plug to a tightening torque of 35 Nm (do not overtighten, to avoid stripping the threads in the aluminum oil pan).
  6. Add new oil:
    1. Pour approximately 6 liters of fresh oil into the oil filler neck.
    2. Check the level on the dipstick; it should be approximately halfway between the MIN and MAX marks.
  7. Test run:
    1. Close the oil filler cap and insert the dipstick.
    2. Start the engine and let it idle for 1–2 minutes. The oil pressure light should go out.
    3. Stop the engine and let the oil drain into the oil pan (about 5 minutes).
  8. Final level check:
    1. Remove the dipstick, wipe it with a clean cloth, reinsert it, and remove it again.
    2. Bring the oil level to the optimal level (closer to the MAX mark), adding it in small increments (an additional 0.5 liters may be required).
    3. Check for leaks from the drain plug and filter cover.
