Step-by-step guide for oil change on M54 engines
Changing the oil in a BMW M54 engine (2.2–3.0 L capacity) is a simple procedure thanks to the convenient top-mounted oil filter. You'll need approximately 6.5 liters of oil (BMW Longlife-01 approval), a new filter, O-rings, and a 17 mm Allen key or socket for the drain plug.
What you need:
- 5W-30 or 5W-40 engine oil (6.5 L capacity).
- Oil filter (e.g., Mann HU 925/4 x or Mahle OX 1541D).
- O-ring set (usually included with the filter).
- New oil pan drain plug or copper/aluminum washer for it.
- Oil filter cap socket (usually 36 mm) with a ratchet.
- A set of wrenches/sockets (for removing the crankcase guard and drain plug, often a 17mm wrench).
- A container for draining the used oil (at least 7 liters).
- Rags, funnel, and gloves.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Warm the engine to operating temperature to make the oil more fluid, then turn off the engine and open the hood.
- Remove the oil filler cap and lift the dipstick slightly (this will help the oil drain faster).
- Replace the oil filter:
- Using a 36mm wrench, carefully unscrew the oil filter housing cover (it is located at the front of the engine, closer to the intake).
- Remove the old filter and remove the old rubber O-rings from the stem and cover.
- Install the new O-rings from the filter kit, after lubricating them with fresh oil.
- Install the new filter into the filter cup until it clicks into place, then screw the cap back on. The recommended tightening torque is 25-27 Nm.
- Drain the old oil:
- Drive the vehicle onto a pit/overpass or raise it on a lift.
- Remove the engine guard (if equipped) to access the oil pan.
- Place a container underneath to catch the used oil and carefully unscrew the drain plug. Be careful—the oil is hot!
- Wait until the oil has completely drained (about 10-15 minutes).
- Close the drain hole:
- Clean the plug seat.
- Replace the O-ring on the plug (or install a new plug).
- Tighten the plug to a tightening torque of 35 Nm (do not overtighten, to avoid stripping the threads in the aluminum oil pan).
- Add new oil:
- Pour approximately 6 liters of fresh oil into the oil filler neck.
- Check the level on the dipstick; it should be approximately halfway between the MIN and MAX marks.
- Test run:
- Close the oil filler cap and insert the dipstick.
- Start the engine and let it idle for 1–2 minutes. The oil pressure light should go out.
- Stop the engine and let the oil drain into the oil pan (about 5 minutes).
- Final level check:
- Remove the dipstick, wipe it with a clean cloth, reinsert it, and remove it again.
- Bring the oil level to the optimal level (closer to the MAX mark), adding it in small increments (an additional 0.5 liters may be required).
- Check for leaks from the drain plug and filter cover.
