Обзор

The BMW E38 is the third generation of the BMW 7 Series luxury flagship sedan, widely celebrated for its timeless styling, advanced engineering, and peak mechanical build quality. Produced between 1994 and 2001, the E38 remains a legendary automotive icon, popular among collectors and famously recognized in pop culture from movies like Tomorrow Never Dies and the Russian cult film Bumer.

Key Specifications & Layout

  • Body Styles: Standard wheelbase (i) and Long wheelbase (iL) adding 140 mm of rear legroom.
  • Powertrains: Inline-6, V8, and V12 petrol variants, along with Inline-6 and V8 diesels.
  • Drivetrain: Traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout.
  • Transmissions: 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, or a 5-speed ZF automatic transmission.

Technology & Features

The E38 was a pioneer for modern luxury vehicle tech. It was the first European car to offer an integrated satellite navigation system and the first BMW to feature a built-in television screen.

  • Safety First: Introduced first-of-its-kind Curtain Airbags (Head Protection System) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC).
  • High-End Comfort: Available with "Contour" massaging seats, double-glazed acoustic side windows, electronic damper control (EDC), and soft-close trunks.
  • The "Highline" & "Individual": Exclusive trims offered premium additions like rear writing desks, integrated refrigerators, and bespoke upholstery options.

LCI

The LCI (Life Cycle Impulse)—BMW’s term for a mid-cycle facelift—occurred in September 1998 for the 1999 model year. It brought significant visual refinement, updated electronics, and mechanical overhauls to the E38.

Here are the key differences between the Pre-LCI (1994–1998) and LCI (1999–2001) models:

1. Exterior Styling Changes

The LCI gave the E38 a sleeker, more modern appearance that aligned it with the then-new E46 3 Series.

  • Headlights: Pre-LCI cars have straight, rectangular lower headlight edges. LCI models feature the distinct "scalloped" lower edge with wave-like cutouts underneath the lenses.
  • Kidney Grilles: The front grilles became more pronounced, sporting a more vertical, three-dimensional look with chrome vertical slats on higher-end models.
  • Tail Lights: Pre-LCI cars used standard plastic lenses. LCI cars switched to clear turn signal sections with "brilliant-cut" crystalline lenses.
  • Side Skirts & Trim: The black plastic lower body skirts were changed to body-color painted skirts. The trunk handle garnish also received a chrome strip.

2. Engine & Mechanical Updates

The most critical mechanical change involved the introduction of VANOS (variable valve timing) to the V8 engines.

  • M62 Technical Update (M62TUB44): The 740i/740iL received the "TU" engine. While horsepower officially stayed at 282 hp, torque increased from 420 Nm to 440 Nm, peaking much lower in the RPM range.
  • Throttle Control: Switched from a traditional mechanical throttle cable to an electronic "drive-by-wire" throttle system.
  • Water-Cooled Alternator: The V8 engines switched to a complex, water-cooled alternator system (more expensive to replace).
  • Suspension: Minor steering rack adjustments and suspension geometry updates were made to improve ride comfort and handling sharpness.

3. Interior & Electronics Upgrades

The electronic architecture transitioned to a much faster digital bus system, altering how retrofits and repairs are handled today.

  • Illuminated Door Handles: LCI models added subtle ambient lighting tucked inside the interior chrome door handles.
  • Central Locking Button: Moved from the center console near the hazard switch down to the center console plate next to the shifter.
  • Mattress / Active Seats: Introduction of the "Active Seat" feature for the driver, which gently shifts body weight left and right using fluid-filled bladders to reduce fatigue.
  • Audio & Navigation: Upgraded from the older I-Bus electronics to newer modules. The navigation screen transitioned from the small 4:3 display to the highly sought-after 16:9 widescreen format in late 2000.
